ProAV

Commercial and residential AV systems: AV-over-IP, HDBaseT, audio matrix, HDMI / HDCP / CEC, and integration with the major control-system ecosystems used by ProAV integrators.

Broadcast

Live encoding pipelines, captioning delivery systems, low-latency video transport over standard uplinks, set-top-box hardware and the firmware that drives it.

Embedded firmware, hardware bring-up, production-line test-fixture firmware, multi-MCU porting under production-continuity pressure, schematic review. Work that fits in the Dutch high-tech systems-integration supply chain and the surrounding ecosystem of equipment builders.

KNX, DMX/RDM, DALI, 0-10V, Z-Wave, MQTT and Home Assistant integrations. Whole-home wiring, custom integrations between AV and home-automation layers, single-party delivery in combination with the design side of the work.

In collaboration with Ontwerpbureau Op den Kamp: single-party delivery for clients who want design and technology integration as one package, not two contractors trying to coordinate. Lighting selection, advice and supply, plus the technical install: cabling, KNX, AV distribution, lighting control (DMX/RDM, KNX, DALI, 0-10V) and home automation. All of it woven into the architectural design from the start instead of bolted on afterwards.

Code & architecture audits

Independent assessment of an existing embedded codebase or AV system. What works, what doesn't, what to fix first, what the long-term maintenance trajectory looks like.

ProAV system design & specification

For integrators or end-clients designing a residential or commercial AV install: which products, which network, which control approach, what's the upgrade path. Vendor-neutral on principle (I know the Pulse-Eight catalog deeply but the recommendation always follows the use case).

AV-over-IP network design advisory

For installs that need real multi-switch IGMP-aware multicast distribution, PoE+ endpoint power planning, switch selection (Araknis / Netgear AV-line / others), bandwidth budgeting per node. I run a multi-switch reference install at office scale that exercises the same patterns.

HDBaseT ↔ AV-over-IP migration advisory

For installations moving from HDBaseT to AV-over-IP (or wondering whether they should). I have run this exact migration on the office reference install, and have handled it across the Pulse-Eight product line on the firmware side too.

HDMI / CEC compatibility audits

For ProAV integrators whose mixed-vendor installs don't talk CEC properly. The work is picking the right CEC behaviour out of a chain of TVs, AVRs, source devices and matrix gear that each interpret the spec differently. As the libCEC author, I know this niche from the inside.

Field-troubleshooting / escalation-as-a-service

For ProAV integrators stuck on a vendor-product issue that the vendor's own support team can't resolve: I'll diagnose the field issue, and if the root cause is in the firmware of one of the products I know intimately, I'll fix that too. The same role I already perform internally as the final escalation point at Pulse-Eight, available externally.

Schematic review

Pin assignments, network topology, bus loading, signal-integrity considerations. Review before fabrication, not after. Catches the issues that drive expensive board respins.

Production-line test strategy

How do you test boards on the manufacturing line so that real defects get caught and tester false-positives don't kill yield? I've written multiple production-line test fixture firmware projects.

CI & automated testing for embedded

Embedded firmware that ships across multiple SKUs, multiple chip generations and multiple product lines needs an automated-test and CI infrastructure to stay reliable. I design and operate these end-to-end: build pipelines that produce signed release artefacts, automated test suites that exercise the firmware against representative hardware (and against bench rigs), and the surrounding tooling that catches regressions before they reach a release branch. Currently active work area on the Pulse-Eight product line.

Technical training sessions

Deep-dive sessions on AV-over-IP and HDBaseT architecture, HDMI / CEC behaviour, embedded firmware practice, or other technical areas covered in this practice. For integrator teams or in-house engineering teams. In-person or remote.

AI-assisted development & dev-tool adoption

Comfortable working with modern AI development tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot). I use them daily as a productivity multiplier when reading large unfamiliar codebases or accelerating routine refactors, and advise teams that want to adopt them sensibly without the hype overshooting the practical value.

Lighting selection, advice & supply

Vendor-neutral lighting selection across brands: fixtures, drivers, control gear, dimming protocols (DMX/RDM, DALI, 0-10V, KNX), plus delivery to the project. Architect-side advice rather than a single-brand catalogue. The recommendation follows the room, the design intent and the control system, not a sales target. Currently delivered as part of the Ontwerpbureau Op den Kamp collaboration; available standalone for interior architects and integrators who want this strand outsourced.

Development & implementation

Hands-on building. I write the code, ship the firmware, bring up the boards, deliver the working system. Fixed scope where the problem is well-defined; hourly with a budget cap where the work is more open-ended.

Embedded firmware development

Bare-metal C on ARM Cortex-M (NXP LPC18xx / LPC11xx / LPC17xx, TI TM4C, Atmel) and adjacent platforms such as ESP32. From greenfield projects to extending existing codebases.

Hardware bring-up & driver development

Schematic-to-driver workflow: read the schematic, read the chip datasheet, write the driver, capture the bus to verify reality matches the code. New chips brought up from datasheet PDFs.

Production-line test fixture firmware

Separate firmware codebases that run during board manufacturing, with different reliability constraints from product firmware. I've written and maintain multiple of these.

Custom protocol design

When existing protocols don't fit: BLE between two ESP32s, custom UDP control protocols (mx_remote at Pulse-Eight is mine), API design for embedded HTTP servers, FPGA serial protocols.

Backend & cloud development

Server-side and backend software, both behind hardware products and beyond the device context: HTTP / REST APIs, device-to-cloud integration, relational databases, monitoring and management dashboards, release and update infrastructure. Backend development has been part of my work for many years — from server-side software early in my career to the cloud side of the Pulse-Eight products.

AV / HDMI / CEC integration work

HDMI EDID handling, HDCP, audio infoframes, AV-over-IP node firmware, custom HDMI control flows.

Audio-matrix & DSP firmware

Multi-channel audio firmware down to the signal path: ADC / DAC bring-up and master-mode clocking, FPGA audio-crosspoint control, TDM / I2S audio buses, on-device DSP configuration, S/PDIF and HDMI-ARC paths. Matrix-amplifier and multi-zone audio distribution, the discipline behind a product like the ProAmp8.

Custom control-system integration code

Driver and glue code for the major control-system ecosystems used by ProAV integrators (Control4 / Crestron / Q-SYS / AMX / Savant). Custom UDP protocol bridges between AV products and control platforms.

AV-over-IP install design + commissioning

As a paid engagement: I do the design, the network configuration (switches, IGMP, PoE budget), the on-site commissioning, the integrator-side training. Subcontractors handle cable pulling and rack-build where needed.

End-to-end installations (single-party delivery)

For end-clients who want one party accountable for the whole build, not three contractors trying to coordinate. I run the technical side and bring in subcontractors for the hands-on construction work where needed.

Full ProAV installations

Residential or commercial AV installs end-to-end: design, network, commissioning, on-site work via subcontractors, control-system integration, training and ongoing service contract.

KNX / domotica installations

Whole-home automation installations on KNX (the European wired-automation standard), with optional DMX/RDM, DALI or 0-10V lighting layers and Z-Wave wireless mesh. Often combined with the ProAV install on the same project, since the two integration layers overlap heavily.

KNX / building-automation management & support

Taking over the management of an existing KNX or building-automation installation, residential or commercial: diagnostics, documentation, changes and extensions, and on-call support. For buildings where the original installer is no longer in the picture, or for integrators and property managers who want the KNX layer handled by a specialist.

New-build / renovation with integrated technology

In collaboration with Ontwerpbureau Op den Kamp: full new-build or renovation projects where design and technology integration are delivered as one package by one party. Lighting selection, advice and supply, plus cabling, AV distribution, lighting control (DMX/RDM, KNX, DALI, 0-10V), Home Assistant dashboards tailored to the install, and the custom integrations that show up when designer fixtures need to behave together. All of it woven into the architectural design from the start instead of bolted on afterwards. One contract, one party accountable, no two-contractor coordination problem.
